Our celebration dinner, held in the candlelit church was a huge success and far exceeded all our expectations. Guests were treated to music by Lydia Smith and Oliver Weighwell during the sparkling reception. Photographs were taken whilst they sipped their bubbly and nibbled on canapes.
Once called to dinner by our very capable Master of Ceremonies, Canon Alastair Thompson, they were led through to the church, entirely candlelit apart from the Sanctuary. The ooh’s and ah’s could almost be heard in Leeds! Smoked salmon parcels was followed by roast beef, roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings and seasonal vegetables. Dessert was chocolate mousse and this was all rounded off by fresh coffee and mints. Wine and water flowed. Between courses we were treated to a specially written poem by Julie Tomkins and a poem by Kevin McIntosh. There was also a toast to 130 years of worship at St Giles by Mr Bryan Bundey.
After dinner Rev Canon Max Wigley gave a very thought-provoking speech and the vote of thanks was given by Canon Thompson.
It was a fitting celebration of worship which is continuing to thrive in St Giles today.
