Weddings at St Giles

Thinking about a church wedding?

Congratulations, we wish you well as you begin your journey into married life.

Why get married in Church?

A marriage service, wherever it is held, is a public declaration of love and commitment to your partner.
If you choose to get married in church, there is an added dimension – the assurance that God cares about your relationship and that his resources and strength are available to you. That doesn’t mean that you will avoid completely the usual ups and downs of married life but you will know that you can look to God for help and guidance and that his love will sustain you. You will also have the support and encouragement of the Christian Church Family.

I’m not baptised.  I don’t go to church.  Can I still get married in church?

Yes!  If you live in the parish of the church you want to marry in.

How can I get married at St Giles Bramhope?

You are entitled to be married at St Giles if one or other of you live in the parish of Bramhope. Alternatively you can be married here if you worship at this church and are on the electoral roll.
If you do not already worship with us and are not on the electoral roll then you will be expected to attend some church services for six months before going on the roll.
The rules about residency in the parish are about to change in 2008. Briefly if you have some special connection with St Giles you may still be able to get married in this church even if you do not live or worship here. For weddings after Autumn 2008 please discuss the changes with the vicar.

May we marry on a Sunday?

Although you have the right to get married in a church, the time of the service is decided by negotiation with your vicar. It must be between 8am and 6pm and not clash with other services. Therefore you could get married on a Sunday provided it was not at a time of the normal Sunday services and the vicar was willing to do it.

I’m Church of England and he’s a Catholic. Does that matter?

People of all denominations have a right to be married in their parish church (provided they have not been married before). So it doesn’t matter from the Church of England’s perspective.

What if one of us is divorced?

The Church of England teaches that marriage is for life. It also recognizes that sadly some marriages do fail and if this should happen it seeks to be available for all involved. The Church accepts that it is possible in some circumstances for a divorced person to marry again in church during the life time of a former spouse.
Before you set a date please contact the vicar for a discussion on whether a marriage in church is possible.

Can we renew our vows?

We do offer a Thanksgiving of Marriage service, which may be used when renewing marriage vows, celebrating a special anniversary or after a period of separation or difficulty in marriage. You will need to speak to the vicar for the exact details but there are no legal requirements or set fees.

What does St Giles have to offer?

This is a lovely church in a village setting on the main Leeds Road with good access. Nationally we are minutes away from Leeds Bradford airport. There is seating for 150 before putting in extra chairs! We have a good traditional pipe organ. There is disabled access and a loop system. The Britannia Hotel is located across the road from church.

How much will it cost?

The current (2008) cost including legal fees, publication of banns, the marriage service, the marriage certificate, the organ and recording is £515 -  probably the lowest bill out of the all the wedding expenses!

Whom do I contact?

In the first instance please contact the vicar, Janice Smith on 0113 203 7523.
